Electrochemistry · Nernst equation cell EMF

Consider the following electrochemical cell at 298K

Pt ∣ HSnOX2X−(aq) ∣ Sn(OH)X6X2−(aq) ∣ BiX2OX3(s) ∣ Bi(s)\mathrm{Pt}\,|\,\ce{HSnO2^-}(\mathrm{aq})\,|\,\ce{Sn(OH)6^{2-}}(\mathrm{aq})\,|\,\ce{Bi2O3}(\mathrm{s})\,|\,\mathrm{Bi}(\mathrm{s}).

If the reaction quotient at a given time is 10610^{6}, then the cell EMF (EcellE_\mathrm{cell}) is × 10−1\times\,10^{-1} V (Nearest integer).

Given the standard half-cell reduction potential as

EBiX2OX3/Bi, OHX−0=−0.44E^{0}_{\ce{Bi2O3}/\mathrm{Bi},\,\ce{OH-}} = -0.44 V and

ESn(OH)X6X2−/HSnOX2X−, OHX−0=−0.90E^{0}_{\ce{Sn(OH)6^{2-}}/\ce{HSnO2^-},\,\ce{OH-}} = -0.90 V

We corrected a printing error in the original paper

Source printed the second electrode as “Sn(OH)62−_6^{2-}/HSnO2−_2^-, OH” (charge of OHX−\ce{OH-} missing).
