Electrochemistry · Electrode potential and reducing strength

Consider the following reduction processes :

AlX3++3 eX−→Al(s)\ce{Al^3+ + 3e- -> Al(s)}, E∘=−1.66E^\circ = -1.66 V

FeX3++eX−→FeX2+\ce{Fe^3+ + e- -> Fe^2+}, E∘=+0.77E^\circ = +0.77 V

CoX3++eX−→CoX2+\ce{Co^3+ + e- -> Co^2+}, E∘=+1.81E^\circ = +1.81 V

CrX3++3 eX−→Cr(s)\ce{Cr^3+ + 3e- -> Cr(s)}, E∘=−0.74E^\circ = -0.74 V

The tendency to act as reducing agent decreases in the order :

  1. (1)Al >> Cr >> FeX2+\ce{Fe^2+} >> CoX2+\ce{Co^2+}
  2. (2)Al >> FeX2+\ce{Fe^2+} >> Cr >> CoX2+\ce{Co^2+}
  3. (3)Al >> Cr >> CoX2+\ce{Co^2+} >> FeX2+\ce{Fe^2+}
  4. (4)Cr >> FeX2+\ce{Fe^2+} >> Al >> CoX2+\ce{Co^2+}
