Equilibrium · Buffer solution pH

20 mL of a solution of acetic acid required 28.4 mL of 0.1 M NaOH for its neutralization. A solution (X) was prepared by mixing 20 mL of the above acetic acid and 14.2 mL of 0.1 M NaOH solution. What is the pH of the solution (X) ? (pKa\mathrm{p}K_\mathrm{a} value of acetic acid is 4.75).
  1. (1)7.0
  2. (2)4.75
  3. (3)3.5
  4. (4)4.82
We corrected a printing error in the original paper

Source printed option (2) as “4.45” (no option was then correct); corrected to the intended “4.75” — 14.2 mL is exactly half the 28.4 mL needed, so pH = pKaK_\mathrm{a} = 4.75 (source key (2)).
